How to Know If Weekly Therapy Isn’t Enough (And What to Do Instead)

At some point, a lot of people have this thought in therapy:

“I don’t want to keep talking about this for another year.”

Not because therapy isn’t helpful
Not because you’re doing anything wrong.

But because something still isn’t shifting. You may not even know what it is thats not shifting.. but things just don’t see to be hitting the root.

You might notice:

  • you understand your patterns but still react the same way (no matter how many coping skills you learn).

  • you’ve talked about the same experiences many times

  • you feel like you’re circling instead of moving through

  • things make sense logically, but don’t feel different

And that’s usually the moment people start wondering:

“Is this just how it is?”
“Do I need something different?”

Why Weekly Therapy Doesn’t Always Create the Shift You’re Looking For

Weekly therapy can be incredibly helpful!

But it’s not always designed for deeper processing work.

In a typical format:

  • you’re meeting for 50 minutes

  • you’re stopping and starting each week

  • your nervous system has to re-enter the work every time just to make a micro move forward.

That can make it harder to stay with what’s coming up long enough to fully move through it.

So instead of processing, it can start to feel like:

  • talking about the same things over and over

  • gaining insight without relief

  • feeling stuck even though you’re trying your hardest

This is not a failure.

It’s often a limitation of the format.

Insight Is Not the Same as Processing

This is one of the biggest misunderstandings about therapy.

You can:

  • understand your trauma and what happened

  • explain your reactions

  • know where things come from

…and still feel the same when something gets triggered.

Because insight happens in the thinking part of your brain.

Processing happens in your nervous system.

If your body is still reacting, there is likely more to process. Having insight is great and important in the therapy process too, it just isn’t going to be enough to move you past what you body is holding on to.

Signs Weekly Therapy Might Not Be Enough

This doesn’t apply to everyone.

But for some people, there are clear signs:

  • you’ve been in therapy for a while and feel stuck

  • you understand things but don’t feel different

  • your symptoms come back quickly between sessions

  • you feel like you’re starting over each week

  • you want to go deeper but don’t have enough time

  • you’ve tried different talk therapists and still don’t feel like you’ve gotten to the “root”

These are often the clients who benefit most from a different approach.

What to Do Instead

If weekly therapy isn’t creating the shift you’re looking for, it doesn’t mean you need more therapy or that your therapist isn’t “good”.

It often means you need a different structure.

This is where EMDR intensives can make a big difference (in a short amount of time).

What Are EMDR Intensives?

EMDR intensives are longer, focused sessions designed to help you stay in the processing instead of stopping and starting.

Instead of spreading the work out over months, you create space to move through it more fully.

This allows for:

  • deeper processing

  • more continuity

  • less disruption

  • faster results

For many people, this is where things finally start to shift.

EMDR, Brainspotting, and Deeper Trauma Work

In intensives, I may use EMDR, Brainspotting, or both depending on what fits best and what we find you respond best to.

These approaches:

  • work directly with the nervous system

  • help process trauma stored in the body

  • go beyond talking alone

I love having the option to integrate both approaches so we can really process deeply and cater the experience to what works best for you. Don’t worry, I’ll break down how each work and what it will look like in session!

You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck

If you’ve been feeling like therapy isn’t getting you where you want to go, it doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

It might just mean you need something different.

-More time
-More space
-A different approach

That’s often where things begin to change.
