Is Weekly Therapy Moving Too Slowly? When an EMDR Intensive Might Make More Sense

Have you ever found yourself leaving therapy thinking:

"Ok, I know exactly why I feel this way... but I still feel this way and can’t move on."

Or maybe you've spent months (or even years) talking about the same patterns, memories, or struggles and wondering why things aren't changing as quickly as you'd hoped.

So many of my clients have had this experience, and it can be all too common!

Weekly therapy can be incredibly helpful. For many people, it's exactly the right fit. But there are times when the traditional one-hour-per-week model simply doesn't provide enough time or momentum to work through deeper trauma, anxiety, attachment wounds, or long-standing emotional patterns.

That's where EMDR intensives come in.

Why Weekly Therapy Sometimes Feels Slow

Traditional therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.

By the time you:

  • check in

  • discuss what's happened since your last session

  • settle into the work

it can feel like the session is over just as you're getting to the important part (and sometimes, it may take awhile for you to even build up to talking about the “important part”).

This isn't because therapy isn't working.

It's because healing complex experiences often requires more uninterrupted time than a weekly session allows.

Many clients seeking trauma therapy in Florida and Alabama tell me things like:

  • "I feel like we're just scratching the surface."

  • "Every time I start opening up, the session ends."

  • "I understand my trauma intellectually, but I still feel stuck emotionally."

  • "I don't want to spend another year talking about the same thing."

These frustrations are common and don't mean you've “failed therapy” or that therapy doesn’t work.

They may simply mean you need a different format.

What Is an EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR intensive allows you to complete several hours of focused therapy over one or more days instead of spreading the work out over months; a very common time frame that I work in is 4-4.5 hours in one intensive day (don’t worry, we take breaks, eat snacks, etc.)

At Hello Calm Therapy, clients often choose:

  • One-Day EMDR Intensives (90 minute intake + 6 hour intensive day)

  • Two-Day EMDR Intensives (90 minute intake + 4.5 hours, 2 days)

  • Three-Day EMDR Intensives (9o minute intake + 4 hours, 3 days)

Rather than stopping after 50 minutes, we have the time to:

  • identify patterns

  • map out experiences

  • process memories

  • address triggers

  • strengthen positive beliefs

  • integrate healing

without repeatedly losing momentum.

Many clients describe it as finally having enough time to fully settle into the work and see it all the way through.

Signs Weekly Therapy May Be Moving Too Slowly

You've Been Discussing the Same Issue for Months

If you find yourself revisiting the same memories, fears, or relationship patterns over and over again, it may be a sign that more concentrated work could be beneficial.

You Feel Like You're Constantly Starting Over

Many clients spend the first portion of each session catching their therapist up on what happened during the week.

By the time they get to the deeper work, the session is ending.

Your Symptoms Feel Urgent

Sometimes clients are dealing with:

  • severe anxiety

  • panic attacks

  • trauma triggers

  • relationship crises

  • medical trauma

  • grief

and simply don't want to wait months to begin feeling relief.

You Have Limited Availability

Many professionals, parents, healthcare workers, and business owners struggle to commit to weekly therapy appointments.

An intensive allows them to dedicate focused time to healing without an ongoing weekly schedule.

Who Is a Good Candidate for an EMDR Intensive?

EMDR intensives can be particularly effective for people struggling with:

Childhood Trauma

Many clients come to intensives after years of feeling stuck in patterns that began long ago.

Anxiety

When anxiety feels persistent despite understanding where it comes from, intensive work can help address the underlying experiences fueling it.

Relationship Patterns

Clients often seek intensives when they notice recurring issues such as:

  • fear of abandonment

  • people pleasing

  • difficulty trusting

  • relationship anxiety

  • emotional reactivity

Medical Trauma and Chronic Illness

Many of my clients come to therapy carrying trauma related to:

  • chronic illness

  • autoimmune diagnoses

  • surgeries

  • medical procedures

  • difficult healthcare experiences

These experiences often deserve more focused attention than weekly therapy allows.

Religious Trauma

Religious trauma frequently involves years of experiences, beliefs, and emotional wounds that benefit from dedicated processing time.

Why Clients Travel for EMDR Intensives

One of the unique benefits of intensive therapy is that clients don't have to live nearby.

Because intensives are scheduled over one or more concentrated days, many clients choose to travel for treatment.

Instead of attending therapy every week for months, they can:

  • travel to Pensacola

  • complete focused treatment

  • return home with a clear plan for continued support

This is especially appealing for clients throughout:

  • Florida

  • Alabama

  • Georgia

  • Mississippi

  • other southeastern states

who are looking for specialized trauma treatment.

Does an EMDR Intensive Replace Weekly Therapy?

It does not need to!

Some clients use intensives as their primary therapy experience.

Others continue working with a local therapist while using an intensive to address specific trauma memories or challenges.

Many clients find that intensive work helps them make progress that would have otherwise taken much longer to reach through weekly sessions alone.

What Makes EMDR Intensives Different?

The biggest difference is simple:

Time.

More time means:

  • deeper focus

  • fewer interruptions

  • stronger momentum

  • less waiting between sessions

  • more opportunities for meaningful processing

For many clients, this creates a completely different therapy experience.
